How to Install a
Satellite Dish
In order to install a satellite dish for watching a fixed
satellite system you will need the following:
A satellite dish and LNB
A satellite receiver
A pole mount or wall mount for the dish
An electric drill and assorted drill bits
Wall bolts, usually called expanding wall bolts (they are
better than plastic rawl plugs
2 F type connectors
A length quality satellite grade coax
A hammer
Coax clips to secure the cable to the wall
Water proof insulation tape
Ladders (if its high up on a wall)
The first thing that you need to do is locate where your
desired satellite is. This is relatively simple using the
satellite position finder on this website. First find your
home location, then select the satellite from the drop down
list and using the Google overhead view find a local land
mark and make sure that you can see it from the proposed
satellite dish position.
Once that you have found a suitable position, its now
necessary to place the mount on the wall, mark it clearly
using a marker pen at all four bolt locations, and using
associated masonry drill bits drill the four holes enough to
take the expanding bolts. Offer up the mount to the wall and
insert the bolts. Using a spanner tighten up the bolts, so
that it is firm.
Next attach the dish and LNB. You can now run the coax from
the LNB down to the satellite receiver. Attach the F
connector at the LNB, making sure that it is water tight
using water proof tape.
Using cable clips make a net job of attaching the cable to
the wall.
Getting the cable into the house, you can either go through
a window frame, or through the brickwork.
To make a really neat job, you should use a satellite face
plate which will accept an F connector. This is a much
neater solution than the cable running from the dish, down
the wall and into the satellite receiver.
Next job is to make sure you are receiving a satellite
signal. Turn the receiver on and make sure you have selected
Sky News on the Electronic Programme Guide. You may have to
move the dish slightly up or down, maybe left or right. You
should now have your dish installed.
